Opinion: The Fall of North American Freedom
Amid
ongoing political unrest in North America, particularly in the United States of
America (USA), it is crucial to examine the underlying issues and explore paths
to restore freedom back to the citizens. Those in positions of power such as
politicians, community leaders, healthcare professionals are increasingly
infringing upon individual rights and freedoms, often driven by their personal
biases, religious or social ideologies, and a pursuit of complete, unchecked
power and control. This growing desire for absolute authority over citizens,
most notably in the USA, risks crossing the boundary between legitimate
leadership and authoritarianism.
While
leaders should guide society towards a peaceful, successful, and free
community, many are instead leveraging their positions of power to advance
personal agendas that undermine the collective well-being. Politicians such as
Donald Trump, are advocating for the censorship of certain words, the banning
of numerous books, the deportation and persecution of minority groups, and the
infusion of religion into politics. These actions represent just a few examples
of troubling developments in the USA, reflecting a concerning trajectory
reminiscent of the path taken by Germany prior to World War II. In North
America, particularly in Canada, the right to practice any religion is a
fundamental freedom; however, there has been a rise in Christian extremism
across the continent, with efforts to impose religious beliefs on all North
Americans. While religion is a significant aspect of many people’s lives, it
should not be a focal point of federal governance. If this abuse of power
persists, North America may face the emergence of a cult-like following of
leaders and politicians, similar to the regime of Kim Jong Un in North Korea.
Although the majority of North Korea is not religious, Kim Jong Un has
consolidated his power to the extent that he is viewed as a god-like figure,
exercising absolute control over his citizens and severely limiting individual
freedoms.
In
addition to their insatiable thirst for power, many leaders and politicians
treat entire communities as mere assets to be bought or seized for personal
gain. In February 2025, Donald Trump posted an AI-generated video featuring
himself, Elon Musk, and other prominent figures 'taking over' Gaza. The video
included an unsettling, chant-like song promoting the purchase of Gaza and its
transformation into a tourist destination to generate profits for the USA. The video also featured propaganda-style imagery, including golden
balloons and statues honoring Donald Trump. In March 2025, Trump held an
advertising campaign at the White House to promote Tesla. While this action
does not directly violate the U.S. Constitution, it raises significant concerns
about potential conflicts of interest, abuse of power, and the future violation
of constitutional principles.
In
conclusion, the growing trend of authoritarianism and the infringement on
individual freedoms in North America, particularly in the USA, poses
a significant threat to democracy and the well-being of its citizens. The
unchecked power pursued by political leaders, such as Donald Trump, through
actions like censorship, persecution of minorities, and the fusion of religion
with politics, echoes the dangerous paths taken by historical authoritarian
regimes. The rise of Christian extremism and the commodification of entire
communities for personal gain further exacerbate these concerns. If this
trajectory continues, North America risks sliding into a political environment
where personal freedoms are severely restricted, and power is concentrated in the
hands of a few, creating a climate of control and manipulation reminiscent of
cult-like regimes.
